How Good Is The Offense Really?

Let's talk about the offense, shall we? So, before going into my thoughts on the offense. I want to give you as much stats as possible. For all you stat patrollers out there. Though I do want to attest that stats truly don't show the whole picture. The reality of stats is that it's only one part of the equation. The numbers can look really good. But the numbers that truly mean the most is the scoring and numbers of wins. Well at least that's my opinion. Some care more about individual stats, others care about team, while others care more about the scoreboard and the win column. Don't get me wrong, I personally do love some stats of course. But at the end of the day does that stats match the score board? The truth is you can have the most yards in the game and still lose. We've seen this time and time again in the history of the NFL. But with all that said let's go ahead and show you some stats.

Offensive Team Stats:

Clearly as you can see our offensive team stats aren't bad at all. If anything, it looks really good. But there's definitely some other numbers you have to see, and those numbers are our rankings.

(Rankings found on TeamRankings Website)

Now when getting to the rankings we don't look too bad till we get to redzone scoring. Ranking at 27 with only converting 42.11% is not a good look. For a team with a physical receiver like AJ Brown and a tight end like Dallas Goedert, I don't see why we are struggling so much here. Outside of those two we have Jalen Hurts with his legs as well as D'Andre Swift. Yes, sometimes I feel like we need a bruiser of a running back down there. If only Rashaad Penny could actually get on the field and help the team that could be an added benefit in the endzone.

One thing that I do want to point out as well while I'm still on the #27 redzone scoring conversation. Is that if we were converting at a higher rate. Heck, give me 75% I can tell you now. We wouldn't only be a high scoring offense being at #5 right now. But we could probably be the number one scoring offense. See the thing is that in most power rankings they are ranking the Dolphins higher than us. The reality is they are a really good team. Yet we are undefeated, guess that doesn't mean anything anymore, right? Well, the truth is that the Dolphins are a better scoring team than us. They are ranked #1 scoring a whopping 36.2 points per game AVG. Shouldn't that be us as well?

At 28.2 points per game AVG. While having a 42.11% redzone conversion percentage isn't bad. But imagine what I said earlier. Imagine bringing that up to a 75%. Don't you think that would make us almost unstoppable? Listen the numbers aren't bad. Yet, they could be so much better and that's without a doubt. I love how our offense is playing. But I know for a fact that this offense has so much more to offer and can and could be one if not the greatest offense in NFL history. Yes, we don't have the fastest offense, nor the strongest. What we do have though, is the most balanced with playmakers at every position. We need to take advantage of it all and consistently in every game.

Outside of that, all the players have been doing well. Though I will repeat until it comes into fruition. We need to involve Donta Smith more.

When looking at Devonta Smith's stats they barely stick out. Yes, he's number two on the team in reception, yards, and touchdowns. But if you compare it to Browns 12 more receptions and 251 yards, that's a big difference. Smith is a more than capable receiver. I understand that there are going to be games when one is going to be looked at more than the other. But Jalen Hurts and the offensive coordinator have to do a better job in involving Smith in the gameplan and in games.

There should be some balance, with balance comes a lot more good things if you think about truly. By spreading the ball around to all of your playmakers you're opening the field and having the defense on their toes. Which in turn can help more when coming to scoring and once again our redzone percentage. When watching the Dolphins games, the one thing I notice immediately is they spread the ball. Tua does a really good job in getting all of his playmakers involved. And trust me they have a good amount of them. He feeds them all and never stays looking in the direction of just one player.

When you do such a thing you have the defense attention. They scramble trying to figure out where the next play is going to go. Hence that's why they have so many big plays! (Outside of the speed of course) The reality is that they know how to spread the ball. Defenses don't like not knowing where the ball is going to go next. By involving Smith and Goedert more, we allow ourselves to be more unpredictable. Which can and will lead to bigger plays in the long haul.

The last thing I do want to bring up is Jalen Hurts' interceptions. Yes, I know, it's early in the season to worry. But we have to address it now rather than later. When you have players like Brock Purdy in the NFC that barely makes mistakes with a defense that is top 10 you can't afford to turnover the ball. Those interceptions weren't pretty either. They were either under thrown or the wrong read. He has to do a better job of protecting the ball.

But with all that said, the offense is definitely having a good start to the season. And I know we can be so much better. I feel confident in the coaching staff and believe that this is only the beginning. The coaching staff is going to involve more players and help Hurts spread the ball around better. And who knows, maybe we'll get Rashaad Penny in to help us with our redzone troubles too.
